John 21

1Jesus Appears to Seven of His DisciplesLater on, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin),
Gk. Didymus
Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two of his other disciples were together.Matt 4:21; John 1:45
3Simon Peter said to them, “I'm going fishing.”

They told him, “We'll go with you, too.” So they went out and got into the boat but didn't catch a thing that night.

4Just as dawn was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore. The disciples didn't realize it was Jesus.John 20:14 5Jesus said to them, “Children, you don't have any fish, do you?”

They answered him, “No.”Luke 24:41

6He told them, “Throw the net on the right hand side of the boat, and you'll catch

some.” So they threw it out and were unable to haul it in because it was so full of fish.Luke 5:4, 6-7

7That disciple whom Jesus kept loving said to Peter, “It's the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put back on his clothes, for he was practically naked, and jumped into the sea.John 13:23; 20:2 8But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. They were only about a hundred yards
Lit. two hundred cubits
away from the shore.

9When they arrived at the shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish lying on it, and some bread. 10Jesus told them, “Bring me some of the fish you've just caught.” 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish—153 of them. And although there were so many of them, the net was not torn.

12Then Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?”, for they knew it was the Lord.Acts 10:41 13Jesus went and took the bread and gave it to them, and did

the same with the fish.
14This was now the third time that Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he had been raised from the dead.John 20:19, 26

15Jesus Speaks with PeterWhen they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus
Lit. He
told him, “Feed my lambs.”
16Then he said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus
Lit. He
told him, “Take care of my sheep.”Acts 20:28; Heb 13:20; 1Pet 2:25
17He said to him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was deeply hurt that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” So he said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you!”

Jesus told him, “Feed my sheep.John 2:24-25; 16:30
18“Truly, truly I tell you, when you were young, you would fasten your belt and go wherever you liked. But when you get old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten your belt and take you where you don't want to go.”John 13:36; Acts 12:3-4 19Now he said this to show by what kind of death he would glorify God.

After saying this, he told him, “Keep following me.”2Pet 1:14

20Jesus and the Beloved DisciplePeter turned around and noticed the disciple whom Jesus kept loving following them. He was the one who had put his head on Jesus’ chest at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?”John 13:23, 25; 20:2

21When Peter saw him, he said, “Lord, what about him?”

22Jesus said to him, “If it is my will for him to remain until I come, how does that concern you? You must keep following me!”Matt 16:27-28; 25:31; 1Cor 4:5; 11:26; Rev 2:25; 3:11 23So the rumor spread among the brothers
I.e. Jesus’ followers
that this disciple wasn't going to die. Yet Jesus didn't say to him that he wasn't going to die, but, “If it is my will for him to remain until I come, how does that concern you?”

24This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them down. We know that his testimony is true.John 19:35; 3John 1:12

25Of course, Jesus also did many other things, and I suppose that if every one of them were written down the world couldn't contain the books that would be written.Amos 7:10; John 20:30
